Come, Holy Spirit, Fill the Hearts of The Faithful
O God our merciful Father, who taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending to them the light of Your Holy Spirit, bring us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who with You and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Collect for the Day of Pentecost)
The Day of Pentecost will be celebrated on Sunday, May 31st this year with Divine Service of Word and the Sacrament of Holy Communion.
The risen and ascended Savior sends the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to His people. By the working of the Holy Spirit, mankind is brought together and united in Christ. Language barriers are broken down as the people hear the wonderful works of God in their own native tongue (Acts 2:1-21). Through the preaching of the cross, the Holy Spirit draws people from all nations into the one, holy, Christian and apostolic Church.
The Holy Spirit teaches the words of Jesus, which are the words of the Father who sent Him. These words bestow forgiveness and peace to those who keep and hold on to them, for Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:23-31).
The fifty day celebration of the Easter season comes to a climax, and ends with, the Festival of Pentecost.
By the working of the Holy Spirit, God’s revelation in Jesus Christ becomes effective in history. He is our Sanctifier, entering our hearts at our Baptism, nurturing us though the Word, enabling us to understand the Gospel.
It is by His inspiration that the nations hear God’s message; the curse which ever since the Tower of Babel had prevented one nation from really understanding another is taken away by His sanctifying work.
Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord,
With all Your graces now outpoured
On each believer’s mind and heart;
Your fervent love to them impart.
Lord, by the brightness of Your light
In holy faith Your Church unite;
From ev’ry land and ev’ry tongue,
This to Your praise, O Lord, our God, be sung:
Alleluia! Alleluia! (Lutheran Book of Worship, #163:1)
The Church lives and moves and has its being through the gracious inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Without Him, no one could come to Christ or believe in Him (see Luther’s explanation to the Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed).
To God be the Glory,
Pastor Ray
