The Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran congregation was organized in 1845. The oldest record of Holy Baptism dates from August 24, 1834, and the oldest Holy Communion record shows that a Communion Service was held on January 11, 1835 with 26 persons communion. The congregation was not formally organized until 1845. Membership continued to grow, and in 1854 met with the Reformed Congregation in Little Cove to make plans for the erection of a church building. The land was secured and the present building was erected.
As the years passed, the members saw a need for a constitution and some means of discipline for their organization. On August 20, 1859, eleven members were present at a Convention for the purpose of adopting a Constitution and Discipline for the Lutheran Congregation in Zion's Union Church.
The growth of the congregation was steady, and by 1860 there were 88 confirmed members. In 1945, when Mt. Zion celebrated its 100th Anniversary, there were 125 baptized members and 100 confirmed members. At the 125th Anniversary in 1970, there were 146 baptized members and 144 confirmed members.
The 150th Anniversary was observed on Reformation Sunday, October 29, 1995.
Even though the congregation was originally known as Zion Lutheran Church, a change was made in the name to Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Not long thereafter, the Reformed congregation dissolved and the members joined Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. During the pastorate of the Rev. Donald F. Brake in McConnellsburg, St. Mark's Lutheran Church (the stone church two miles north of Mt. Zion) was closed and the members united with Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
